About Anna Kim Chang-gum

Anna Kim Chang-gum grew up in a Catholic family in Seoul. After becoming a widow, she lived with her elderly mother. Despite poverty, she cared for her mother, who received the sacraments from missionaries before dying.

Anna’s household was close to that of John the Baptist Yi Kwang-nyol. The two families maintained friendly relations. She was arrested with members of his family in April 1839.

The bishops’ conference biography acknowledges that little else about Anna’s life was recorded.

She endured severe punishment at the police and criminal courts without abandoning Catholicism. Anna was executed with seven other Catholics outside Seoul’s Small West Gate on July 20, 1839.
