Biography
Athanasius Bazzekuketta

About Athanasius Bazzekuketta
Athanasius Bazzekuketta served at the Buganda royal court. Kampala’s received account remembers his responsibility for ceremonial robes and treasury.
The Roman Martyrology remembers a recently baptized page killed while being taken with other Christians toward execution.
His precise death date requires care. The official Italian version of Benedict XV’s 1920 beatification document gives 26 May 1886; current church notices commemorate him on 27 May. The document’s admiration for his faith remains distinct from certainty about every historical detail.
Benedict XV’s act permitted public veneration of the martyrs and annual liturgical observance in specified missionary jurisdictions. It records an important stage in their recognition, before Paul VI’s canonization on 18 October 1964.
Kevin Ward places the Uganda martyrs within a complex political setting. Royal anxiety over foreign influence, rival interests at court and new religious loyalties intersected. That context helps explain why their commitment carried danger, without reducing their faith to a political instrument.
