About Anthony Kim Song-u

Anthony Kim Song-u came from Gusan in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province. He and his brothers became Catholics and helped neighbors learn about the religion.

Anthony moved to Seoul to receive the sacraments, then returned to Gusan. He prepared a gathering place at his home and provided accommodation for Maubant.

After his arrest in 1840, Anthony continued teaching Catholicism to fellow prisoners. He refused demands to abandon his faith and was strangled in Seoul on April 29, 1841.

The bishops’ conference gives his birth year as 1794.

The Korean encyclopedia instead gives 1795.
