About Antonio de Badajoz

Antonio de Badajoz came from La Albuera near Badajoz and joined the Alcantarine Franciscan Province of San Gabriel. He was a lay brother, the only one of the five Georgia Martyrs who was not a priest.

He traveled to Florida in 1587 with Pedro de Corpa. By the time he was assigned to Santa Catalina de Guale, ten years of experience had given him a strong command of the language. He served as interpreter for Miguel de Añon and helped with catechesis and the restoration of the mission’s work.

The cause report acknowledges that the places and duties of his earliest Florida service are not precisely known.

His ministry shows the importance of work that did not depend on priestly ordination. The diocesan account remembers his decision to remain when the local chief warned the friars of danger, and his prayer before he was killed in September 1597. The warning also distinguishes a protective Guale leader from the attackers.

Later devotional scenes imagine his words and thoughts. They cannot be treated as a transcript of his final hours.

Francis and Kole caution that the precise responsibility for the killings and their full motives remain uncertain. This limits what can be asserted about individual attackers or a single cause of the violence.

Pope Francis recognized the group’s martyrdom in 2025. As of October 23, 2026, their beatification remains scheduled for October 31 in Savannah.
