Asclepiades of Antioch

About Asclepiades of Antioch
Asclepiades is remembered as an early Christian bishop of Antioch. The Catholic Church in Norway’s directory commemorates him as a saint on October 18.
A surviving letter from Alexander offers a personal glimpse of the hope surrounding his appointment. Alexander writes as a prisoner of Jesus Christ and tells the church of Antioch that news of its new bishop has made his own confinement easier to bear. He praises Asclepiades’ faith and fitness for the responsibility, receiving the appointment as a gift of divine providence. At the letter’s close, Alexander commends the priest Clement, through whom he sends his message. He describes Clement as already known to the recipients and as someone who has strengthened the church where Alexander is staying. These fragments show Asclepiades’ appointment bringing encouragement beyond his own community. They preserve another bishop’s esteem for him, rather than a detailed account of his upbringing or of the work he later carried out in Antioch.
Eusebius calls him a confessor.
Later descriptions have also called him a martyr. The Norwegian Catholic directory itself notes that this language probably reflects suffering during persecution, while reporting that he died peacefully. Its account should therefore not be turned into a story of execution. The distinction matters: faithfulness under pressure can be remembered without supplying a violent death that the evidence read here does not establish.
His episcopal chronology remains uncertain. McGiffert discusses competing dates for his appointment and concludes that its duration cannot be determined securely. An exact death year is therefore left unset, rather than inferred from a proposed end to his episcopate.
His name continued to appear in later records of the church. A medieval list preserved in Textus Roffensis places Asclepiades between Serapion and Philetus among the bishops of Antioch. The published transcription records his name without adding a biography. That brief entry shows how he was remembered within the succession, but it cannot fill the gaps left by the earlier letter or determine his life dates.
