Athanasius of Naples

About Athanasius of Naples
Athanasius became bishop of Naples in 849 after training under Bishop John IV. He promoted clerical education, manuscript copying and liturgical music, and established a hospice for poor people and pilgrims.
Conflict with his nephew, Duke Sergius II, led to arrest and flight from Naples. Athanasius sought imperial and papal help, and also asked that the city be released from an interdict. He died at San Quirico near Veroli on July 15, 872, before returning to his see.
