Attala of Strasbourg

About Attala of Strasbourg
Attala became the first abbess of Saint-Étienne at Strasbourg in the early eighth century. The diocesan account identifies her as the daughter of Adalbert, duke of Alsace, who entrusted the new foundation to her.
She was introduced to monastic life by her aunt Odile, according to the tradition recalled in Bishop Xavier Malle’s homily at the school that occupies the site.
The diocesan history remembers her care for people in poverty and places her death in 741.
Her remembrance continues at the Collège Episcopal Saint Etienne, which celebrates her patronal feast.
The diocesan calendar commemorates Attala with Eugénie on September 25.
