About Atto of Pistoia

Atto was abbot at Vallombrosa before becoming bishop of Pistoia in 1133. His diocesan biography describes a bishop who retained his monastic identity.

His relations with the city’s government included serious conflict. He helped obtain a relic attributed to James from Compostela, which reached Pistoia in 1144 and became important to the city’s devotional and civic life.

The diocesan account, citing the local calendar, gives his death as June 21, 1153.
