About Augusto Andrés

Born in Santander in May 1910, Augusto Andrés was a Lasallian brother.

The Brothers of the Christian Schools are lay religious educators. Their institute’s educational vocation is distinct from priestly ordination: being a brother means living a consecrated life devoted to teaching.

The Church’s account records his execution at Turón’s cemetery on 9 October 1934.

His memory belongs to the wider story of the Turón martyrs. Historian Brian D. Bunk studies how their deaths entered political argument, including conservative portrayals that justified retaliation. That analysis describes the uses of martyr imagery; it does not establish this brother’s own political beliefs.

Local remembrance was already visible at the group’s beatification in 1990. Writing that year in Revista de Santander, Manuel García Ruiz reported a Cantabrian delegation that included clergy, schoolchildren, religious and families. His account also describes a subsequent papal audience and gifts associated with Santander and the Lasallian federation. This is contemporary reporting of their reception, rather than an eyewitness description of the killing.

John Paul II canonized the Turón martyrs on 21 November 1999. His homily remembered their prayer and fraternity and described them as educators whose religious commitment endured through suffering. The pope presented them to the Church as examples of Christian life.

An Oviedo archdiocesan report in November 2024 described their continuing place in parish life at San Martín de Turón. The parish priest recalled a painting and relics installed during earlier church work and explained the dedication of a new daily chapel to the martyrs. This local commemoration keeps the community’s memory of them connected with a place of prayer.

Their Lasallian memorial is observed on 9 October.
