Avilius of Alexandria

About Avilius of Alexandria
Avilius is remembered as an early leader of the Christian community of Alexandria. The received History of the Patriarchs places him after Annianus and counts him as the third patriarch in succession from Mark. It describes the community assembling and choosing him to lead it. This is a later account of an early ministry, rather than a contemporary record of the election.
The same brief account remembers a chaste life, instruction in the knowledge of Christ and an increase in believers. It portrays his time in office as peaceful and gives twelve years for his tenure. After his death, the narrative turns to the choice of Cerdo. Its emphasis falls on continuity of leadership and the faith of the community, while few individual episodes from Avilius’s life are preserved.
Clyde Curry Smith’s scholarly account explains why the numbering needs care. Earlier episcopal lists do not all begin their count in the same way, particularly in relation to Mark. Smith also stresses the limited personal evidence available for these early Alexandrian leaders. A place in a succession list establishes a remembered office; it does not supply a detailed biography, an authenticated likeness or a record of every action taken during a tenure.
The textual history also matters. The University of Louvain’s research project describes the patriarchal history as a tradition with several contributors and two recensions. Its earlier material includes translations from Coptic sources. It identifies the early patriarchs’ accounts, including Abilius’s, as brief biographical notices. Those layers should remain distinct from contemporary first-century testimony.
The chronology remains approximate. Smith’s editorial account places the end of Avilius’s tenure around 98. His birth date and the places of his birth and death are not established by the material reviewed here. Alexandria identifies the community he led; that office alone does not identify either endpoint of his life.
