About Basil of Parium

Basil served as bishop of Parium during the eighth century. The Orthodox Church in America’s notice says that the local people chose him as their bishop. His remembered ministry centers on resistance to the suppression of religious images.

According to the received account, Basil refused to sign the iconoclastic orders associated with the council held in 754 under Constantine V. He excluded supporters of those policies from his diocese and endured persecution, hunger, and deprivation. The notice remembers his fidelity until death but does not establish an exact death year.
