About Benno

The sources do not establish Benno's birth year or birthplace. Claims that he was born near Hildesheim, studied there, or became a Benedictine are expressly uncertain.

His episcopate began in 1066. Amid the investiture conflict, he later sought reconciliation with Henry IV.

During the Saxon conflicts of 1073 and 1075, Benno withheld the military aid Henry IV requested and remained neutral.

In September 1075 the king captured him at Meissen on a treason accusation. Benno escaped in 1076, after Henry was excommunicated and many princes abandoned him.

Benno then joined the Gregorian side and took part in the election of Rudolf of Rheinfelden in 1077.

A Mainz synod excommunicated Benno in 1085, and he temporarily lost his see. After he regained it, Benno worked to mediate the conflict between Henry IV and Saxon bishops.

Benno's precise death date is unknown. The consecration of his successor fell between June 1105 and April 1107, and the scholarly biography locates Benno's death at Meissen.

The diocese gives June 16, 1106 as probable; Benno was buried at Meissen Cathedral.

Pope Adrian VI canonized Benno on May 31, 1523.

The canonization campaign drew on Hieronymus Emser's 1512 life of Benno, written centuries after the bishop's death. Collins treats such hagiography as evidence for canonization culture rather than a transparent record of eleventh-century events.

The fish-and-key story is explicitly presented as a legend by the diocese.

Benno remains patron of the Diocese of Dresden-Meissen, where June 16 is celebrated as a solemnity.
