Blane

Portrait of Blane

About Blane

Blane is remembered as a missionary bishop associated with Bute and Dunblane in Scotland. Tradition says that he studied in Ireland before returning to Bute and receiving ordination from his uncle Cathan.

It connects him with the foundation of a church or monastery at Dunblane and with the community at Kingarth. The church biography warns that the details of his life are few and legendary.

It places his death around 590 at Kingarth while discussing implausible competing dates. His Scottish cult received papal confirmation in 1898, providing a clearer later record than the stories surrounding his early life.
