Bolcan, also called Olcan, is remembered as an early Irish bishop associated with Armoy. The state heritage account identifies the story of Patrick placing him there as a late tradition.
An older reference work connects the names Derkan and Airthir-muge with this bishop and distinguishes him from another Olcan commemorated in July.
The surviving round tower at Armoy belongs to the eleventh or twelfth century, well after the traditional setting of his life.
