Britto of Trier

About Britto of Trier
Britto became bishop of Trier in 374 and took part in the gathering of Gallic bishops at Valence that year. He supported allowing Christians who had lapsed during Julian’s reign to return under specified conditions.
The church biography also records his attendance at the Roman synod of 382 under Pope Damasus. It describes him opposing Priscillian’s teaching while refusing to hand its adherents to civil authorities for punishment.
Britto’s death is placed around 385 at Trier. His remembered distinction is this separation between theological opposition and using the state to punish religious dissent.
