About Bruno Sserunkuuma

Bruno Sserunkuuma served at the royal court in Buganda. Benedict XV’s 1920 account describes service under Muteesa and military service under Mwanga. It records his baptism on 15 November 1885 and remembers him encouraging his companions. He was among those executed at Namugongo on 3 June 1886.

That account also describes his departure from the home he shared with a brother and his participation in the Catholic community at court. It gives only a brief outline of this transition. Its emphasis falls on the support he offered other Christians, rather than a detailed record of his earlier years.

The shrine remembers his struggle with drinking and violence.

Paul VI canonized the group in 1964; their collective feast is 3 June.

His name remains present in Ugandan church life. Tororo’s official parish record identifies St. Bruno Sserunkuuma Catholic Parish at Agururu, founded in 1970. This is a later community honouring him, rather than a place where the martyr himself lived.

A Uganda Prisons Service report also describes a patronal observance at Namugongo involving prison, police and military personnel. Bruno was remembered with Ponsiano Ngondwe and Gonzaga Gonza in a procession and Mass. This documents later religious remembrance, rather than new evidence about his life.
