About Cassian of Tangier

Cassian is remembered as a Christian martyr at Tingis, now Tangier. According to the received story, he served as a court stenographer and refused to record the condemnation of the soldier Marcellus.

The story says that he threw down his writing tools, confessed his Christianity and was imprisoned. He was then executed.

The stenographer episode may be a fictional addition to the authentic acts of Marcellus. Cassian’s veneration is nevertheless attested in the fourth century, and Prudentius mentions him in his martyr poetry.
