About Catherine Yi
Catherine Yi knew about Catholicism before marrying a man who did not share her religion. She encouraged him toward Christianity, and the encyclopedia records that he received baptism before his death. As a widow, she returned with her children to her own family because her husband’s relatives opposed Catholicism.
Her daughter Magdalena Cho chose to remain unmarried and supported her mother.
Catherine moved to Seoul in 1838. Bishop Laurence Imbert helped arrange accommodation at the home of Barbara Cho.
Mother and daughter were arrested in 1839 and refused to deny their religion. They died in prison after severe punishment and illness, probably in late September or early October.
