About Crescentinus

Crescentinus, called Crescenziano at Città di Castello and Crescentino at Urbino, is remembered as a Christian martyr. His veneration belongs to the history of both communities. Historian Pierluigi Licciardello identifies the transfer of his relics to Urbino in 1068 as a turning point in the development of the written stories about him.

The traditional account presents him as a Roman soldier dismissed because of his Christian faith. He comes to the territory of Città di Castello and announces the Gospel. Refusing to sacrifice to pagan gods, he suffers martyrdom and is buried at Saddi. The diocese itself introduces this account with qualifications and describes the year 303 as one tradition, rather than an independently established date.

His remembrance at Saddi is shared with other martyrs. Local liturgical books associate his name with a group buried at the rural church, and their devotion spread widely in medieval central Italy. This communal remembrance is part of the evidence for his cult, even where a detailed personal biography remains difficult to recover.

The eleventh-century translation gave that devotion another centre. Bishop Fulcone of Città di Castello gave the relics to Bishop Mainardo of Urbino, who placed them in the rebuilt cathedral and established Crescentino as a patron of the city.

Urbino’s diocesan history places Mainardo’s work within a wider renewal of the cathedral and its community of clergy. The cathedral had been moved inside the city and dedicated to the Assumption of Mary under his predecessor Teodorico. Mainardo rebuilt and reorganized it, and the martyr’s shrine became part of that renewed church.

Licciardello’s research distinguishes this history of devotion from the development of narrative hagiography. His abstract connects the period after the translation with a liturgical office, a Passion catalogued as BHL 1986, and later texts. These are witnesses to the growth of Crescentinus’s remembrance, rather than contemporary records of his lifetime.

The archdiocese of Urbino continues to name Crescentino among its patrons, with a celebration on 1 June.
