About Diogo Pereira

Diogo Pereira is one of the lay companions honoured with the priest Ambrósio Francisco Ferro among the Natal martyrs. The Holy See’s cause roster lists him as Diego Pereira in the Uruaçu group. He should not be confused with Francisco Mendes Pereira, a separately named companion.

The archdiocesan history dates the killing at Uruaçu to October 3, 1645. It describes Ferro and his companions being held at the Forte dos Reis Magos before being taken to the place of their deaths. This collective account supplies the setting of Pereira’s remembrance, rather than a detailed personal itinerary.

The religious interpretation of the killings remains distinct from their full historical explanation. João Batista Sabino Neto examines how later Catholic writers shaped the narrative of martyrdom. He argues that territorial competition, economic tensions and pragmatic alliances with Indigenous peoples also mattered. His analysis challenges a simple account of religious hostility alone.

Pereira was canonized with the Natal martyrs on October 15, 2017. Cacilda Medeiros reported the participation of pilgrims from Rio Grande do Norte in the Roman celebration. Their presence connected this international recognition with the local community that had sustained remembrance of the victims.

At Uruaçu, the archdiocese describes a monument built after the beatification as a place for large religious gatherings.
