About Domnolus of Le Mans

Domnolus was a sixth-century bishop of Le Mans who had previously led the monastery of Saint-Laurent in Paris. He declined appointment to Avignon before accepting the see of Le Mans. The New Catholic Encyclopedia records his participation in the council at Tours in 567 and associates his episcopate with churches and a hospice for pilgrims.

While abbot in Paris, Domnolus sheltered agents sent by King Chlothar to gather information in his brother’s territory. Royal favor helped open the way to episcopal office. Near the end of his life, illness led him to propose Abbot Theodulf as his successor. King Chilperic initially agreed, then chose Badegisil instead.

The documentary record adds another dimension. Julien Havet examined two donations preserved in the history of Bishop Aldric and accepted those versions as authentic Merovingian documents. He distinguished them from less reliable later copies.

The earlier charter, transmitted in Domnolus’s name, provides land and resources for the church of Saint-Vincent. It lists fields, meadows, woodland, watercourses, livestock, and named enslaved people, including family groups. These provisions show the material basis of a religious foundation and its participation in the coercive social order of the period. The document asks the clergy to confirm the gift and protects it with a warning against anyone who would take the property away.

The later Lives tell a different sort of story. As Korolev explains, the accounts written centuries after Domnolus’s death do not simply reproduce Gregory. One presents him as a reluctant bishop returning from pilgrimage to Rome, recognized and welcomed by the clergy and people of Le Mans. Such details belong to the later portrayal of the saint and should not replace the contemporary account of royal involvement.

Local memory also associates him with hospitality. The diocese’s history of Saint-Pavin describes a hospice founded by Domnolus on the right bank of the Sarthe to receive pilgrims. It cautiously connects its management with the monk Pavin.

Domnolus died in 581. His later burial tradition placed him in the church of Vincent and Laurence that he had founded, remembered afterward as Saint-Vincent-du-Mans.

The diocese continues to list Domnole among its sainted bishops.
