Ebrigisilus of Meaux

About Ebrigisilus of Meaux
Ebrigisilus, also called Evrèle, is remembered as a monk of Jouarre who became bishop of Meaux. Nominis describes his example as a monk and later as a bishop.
Archaeologist Gilbert-Robert Delahaye places his episcopate at the end of the seventh century and beginning of the eighth. That broad setting does not establish a precise birth or death year.
Jouarre preserves a crypt named for him beside the crypt of Saint Paul. The abbey identifies a Merovingian tomb there, linking his remembrance with the surviving fabric of the monastery.
Delahaye records that his remains were transferred to the abbey church in 1627. Drainage work begun in 1985 exposed the sarcophagus, allowing closer examination.
Brown marks inside the stone coffin were interpreted as traces of the burial. Delahaye considered decayed or dyed burial textiles a more likely explanation than direct staining by the body. These observations concern the tomb and its later investigation; they do not supply a detailed account of the bishop’s life.
His local commemoration is listed on August 31.
