About Erasmus of the Kiev Caves

Erasmus is remembered through a monastic narrative attributed to Simon of Vladimir and addressed to Polycarp. As reproduced by the Orthodox Church in America, it describes a monk who spent his wealth on icons for the monastery church, then became discouraged about whether he had used it rightly. The story says that his spiritual life deteriorated and that he became gravely ill. After several days, he reportedly described a vision of Anthony, Theodosius, and Mary, who called him to repentance. He confessed his faults, received the monastic schema, and died three days later. These visions and their promised timing belong to the received religious narrative, not independently verified experiences. The notice records his burial in the Near Caves, but supplies no exact life dates or separate account of his childhood. Its significance lies in a remembered movement from generosity through discouragement to renewed repentance.
