Erembert of Toulouse

About Erembert of Toulouse

Erembert was a monk of Fontenelle who became bishop of Toulouse in the seventh century. Patrice Cabau traces the tradition that he entered the monastery under Wandrille and was appointed bishop under Clotaire III and Queen Bathild. The surviving evidence does not establish a secure year for his death.

His short Life was written much later. Wilhelm Levison places its composition at Fontenelle in the early ninth century and identifies borrowings from Bede and the miracles of Amantius. This distance from Erembert’s lifetime matters when reading its descriptions of his character and wonders.

The Life describes Erembert returning to the family property occupied by his brother Gamard. It places a church dedicated to Saturninus there and connects it with the bishop. Later, Erembert returns to Fontenelle under Abbot Lantbert. The account depicts him dying among the monks and receiving burial in the church of Saint Paul. These details belong to the monastery’s retrospective account.

Its treatment of sacred objects also shows how the community remembered him. The writer says that his pastoral staff and vestment were preserved and moved between churches. A priest who improperly wore the vestment is said to have suffered a fever before recovering through Erembert’s intercession. This is a cautionary miracle story, not medical evidence.

Cabau warns against later descriptions of Erembert as an abbot of Fontenelle or an archbishop of Toulouse. He also rejects a supposed late episcopal signature as an addition by a hagiographer. Such claims cannot safely supply a precise chronology.

His name remains in use at the Saint-Erembert school in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The school’s own history dates its foundation to 1935 and identifies its namesake as the Merovingian bishop from the surrounding area.

Nominis records his local feast on May 14 and gives Herembert as another form of his name.
