Eulalia of Mérida

About Eulalia of Mérida
Eulalia is remembered as a young Christian of Mérida who died during the persecution of Diocletian.
Prudentius portrays her leaving a rural refuge at night and confronting the magistrate. She refuses the sacrificial offering and suffers death by fire. The poem describes a dove departing from her mouth and snow covering her body.
Writing about a century after her death, Prudentius gave her story its earliest surviving extended form. The usual date of her martyrdom is 304, although 303 is also possible.
Her memory took root in the landscape of Mérida. Excavations beneath her church revealed a Christian cemetery beginning in the fourth century, a memorial mausoleum and a fifth-century basilica. The present church occupies this older sacred site.
Devotion also spread beyond Spain, including churches dedicated to her in Béziers and Ravenna. The relationship between her cult and that of the Eulalia honored in Barcelona remains disputed rather than a secure account of two separate lives.
Today her diocesan office commemorates her as a virgin and martyr. Its celebration is a solemnity in Mérida and a memorial in the other churches of the diocese.
