Euphrosynus the Cook

About Euphrosynus the Cook
Euphrosynus the Cook is remembered as a monk whose daily work was preparing food for his community. His Life describes an uneducated man from a rural family, looked down upon by other monks. Behind the work and the ridicule, the narrative places a life of prayer, restraint, and care for others.
The central story concerns a priest who prayed to see the blessings prepared for those who love God. In a vision, he entered a garden and found Euphrosynus there. The cook gave him three apples, which the priest discovered still in his clothing after waking. When the priest told the community, Euphrosynus departed to avoid public praise. These are events reported by a devotional Life, not independently established occurrences.
The chronology is uncertain. The editorial introduction to one published translation places the origin of the short Life between the fourth and seventh centuries, rather than assigning Euphrosynus a securely documented lifetime. Historians Ilias Anagnostakis and Maria Leontsini discuss Euphrosynus within the wider literature of Byzantine monastic kitchens. Their study describes cooks who answered to abbots for supplies, waste, and damaged utensils, sometimes facing harsh penalties. Such stories give otherwise overlooked kitchen workers a central place, whether they are being criticized or honored. This is the social and literary setting in which the cook’s story has been read, rather than proof of every episode it contains.
He is honored as a patron of cooks. The monastery college at Solba presents him under that title in its student magazine, connecting professional kitchen work with the remembrance of a saint. His name has also been used for practical service. An Orthodox Church in America handbook describes a parish project in which volunteers prepared extra meals for an organization serving people unable to shop or cook for themselves. The account offers an example of how devotion to Euphrosynus has inspired care beyond a monastery kitchen.
