Evodius of Rouen

About Evodius of Rouen
Evodius, also known as Yved or Évode, is remembered as a bishop of Rouen. The diocesan account places him in the fifth century and relates a tradition that he was dedicated to church service from childhood. It explains that this association led the cathedral’s choir school to be placed under his patronage. The patronage is explicitly recorded; the childhood account remains a tradition.
His chronological position is unsettled. The cathedral’s published episcopal list places Évode under the year 542, after Flavius, rather than in the fifth century. This disagreement prevents the two local accounts from supporting a single precise lifetime. No exact birth or death year is assigned here.
An older scholarly reconstruction differs again. Georges Goyau’s account of Rouen, following the chronology of Abbé Sauvage, places Evodius around 430. That entry identifies a proposed place in the episcopal succession, not an independently established date of birth or death.
Nominis preserves the tradition that he died at Les Andelys and that his relics were moved first to Rouen’s cathedral and later to Braine. This received account provides a place associated with his death even though it does not resolve the year.
At Braine, the regional heritage inventory explicitly identifies the abbey’s Yved with Evodius, bishop of Rouen. The institution’s history belongs to the later reception of his relics and name, rather than to a monastery founded during his own lifetime.
The surviving former abbey church was rebuilt from the late twelfth century and consecrated in 1216 under the joint dedication of Mary and Saint Yved. The heritage inventory records its later conversion into a parish church and its return to worship under Mary’s dedication in 1837. Its historical dedication to Yved remains part of the building’s identity. These later buildings and institutions show how remembrance of the bishop continued beyond the sparse account of his life.
