Exuperantius of Ravenna

Portrait of Exuperantius of Ravenna

About Exuperantius of Ravenna

Exuperantius served as bishop of Ravenna between Neon and John, later called Angeloptes. Giovanni Lucchesi places his episcopate between a letter addressed to Neon in 458 and John’s consecration in 477. These limits locate him in the later fifth century without establishing a precise beginning for his ministry.

A letter written by Pope Simplicius to John of Ravenna in 482 preserves a less flattering episode. It recalls that John’s predecessor had ordained a priest against the man’s will and received judgment for it. Stanisław Adamiak identifies that predecessor as Exuperantius. The passage gives neither the priest’s name nor the precise penalty.

Agnellus’s account connects his episcopate with Sant’Agnese. It says that Gemellus, a subdeacon of the Ravennate church and administrator in Sicily, built the church during this period. The account also describes gifts enriching it. This does not justify turning Exuperantius himself into the building’s sole founder.

Agnellus frankly acknowledges that the elders had told him little about Exuperantius. In the following section he explains how he filled gaps in his episcopal history: where records and recollections failed, he composed accounts consistent with what he believed about holy bishops. His general praise therefore needs to be distinguished from independently attested events.

The same narrative places Exuperantius’s burial at Sant’Agnese beneath a porphyry slab, while reporting disagreement over whether it lay before or behind the altar. That uncertainty belongs to the source itself.

Lucchesi rejects later identifications with Spanish bishops and with a correspondent of Jerome. Those conflations produced an unsupported account of a Spanish soldier transferred to Ravenna decades too early. He places Exuperantius’s burial in 477 or the preceding year and describes a ninth-century inscription witnessing to his veneration. The approximate death year used here reflects that uncertainty.
