Felix of Bologna

About Felix of Bologna
Felix served as a deacon of Ambrose before becoming bishop of Bologna. The account published by Bologna’s liturgical office places him seventh in the episcopal succession and gives 432 as his death year. This connects his earlier ministry in Milan with his later responsibility for another church.
Paulinus’s Life of Ambrose places Felix among four deacons who discussed the bishop’s successor during his final illness. The author then identifies Felix as the man governing the church of Bologna when he wrote. This early testimony links the Bolognese bishop with Ambrose’s clergy.
A letter from Ambrose to Emperor Theodosius records a particular task entrusted to a deacon named Felix. Ambrose sent him with a letter and a petition on behalf of people who had sought refuge in the Church. He asked the emperor to show mercy and made Felix his representative in presenting the appeal.
The letter preserves the request rather than the outcome of the mission. Ambrose appealed to the emperor’s clemency after his victory, framing compassion as the appropriate response to success. It does not say that Felix secured a pardon, and it supplies no account of his subsequent work as bishop.
Bologna’s own calendar commemorates Felix on October 3. The liturgical account preserves a clear local remembrance of his connection with Ambrose, even though it gives only a brief notice of his episcopate.
