Fidolus of Troyes

About Fidolus of Troyes

Fidolus, known in French as Phal or Fale, is honored as an abbot in the region of Troyes. The Catholic calendar commemorates him on 16 May.

His cult is older than the surviving account of his life. Bruno Krusch points to an early manuscript of the Hieronymian Martyrology that names him as a priest and confessor at Troyes. Krusch argues that the later biographer assembled the captivity story from passages in Gregory of Tours, rather than preserving an independent contemporary account.

Auguste Molinier likewise places the earliest Life no earlier than the end of the eighth century. He distinguishes it from later versions that were once mistakenly considered older.

The Life tells of a young captive brought from Auvergne and redeemed by Abbot Aventinus. Welcomed into the community, Fidolus becomes a leader and eventually succeeds him. The narrative praises humility and recounts healings, but these remain hagiographic claims.

Its final story concerns an enslaved man seeking refuge. Fidolus arranges his return after the owner promises mercy; the promise is broken, and the man is imprisoned. The account attributes his escape to the abbot’s prayer.

In 1865, the priest Defer named him as patron of Saint-Phal and Avirey-Lingey. Defer also described relics kept at Saint-André-lès-Troyes and at the parish church of Saint-Phal. He reported a gift of part of the head relic from Montier-la-Celle to that parish in 1640, followed by its transfer to a new shrine in 1842. This is evidence for the history of the devotion and its custodians, rather than independent confirmation of the relics’ identity.

At Vanvey, a chapel dedicated to Phal stood at the center of a pilgrimage and fair that continued into the nineteenth century. The heritage account records a church mentioned in 1124, while distinguishing it from the later fabric that survives.

The church at Viviers also bears his name. Its heritage plaque explicitly identifies Phal with Fidolus and notes his image in a stained-glass window made in 1902.
