Portrait of Gatian of Tours

About Gatian of Tours

Gatian is remembered as the first bishop of Tours. Gregory of Tours places him among seven bishops sent to preach in Gaul during the reign of Decius.

Gregory describes him as spreading the Christian faith and dying peacefully. This is a sixth-century account of an earlier founder, not contemporary testimony to Gatian’s lifetime.

The chronology remains difficult. The diocese’s historical introduction places the establishment of the see in the early fourth century, while its succession list gives Gatian the years 251–304. Those figures describe a traditional episcopate, not a birth-to-death lifespan. They cannot resolve the difference between Gregory’s account and the later diocesan chronology.

Modern historical criticism questions more than the dates. Henri Galinié treats both Gregory’s third-century mission and the later story making Gatian a disciple sent by Saint Peter as legendary accounts of the Church’s beginnings. His study identifies Lidoire as the first historical bishop, appointed in 337 or 338. Gatian’s place in Catholic remembrance therefore should not be confused with a securely reconstructed episcopal career.

The present cathedral bears Gatian’s name, but its parish history credits Lidoire with building the first cathedral. It describes Gatian gradually becoming the cathedral’s new patron during the fourteenth century. This later dedication preserves his religious memory; it does not establish that he founded the surviving building.
