About Gaudiosus of Brescia

Gaudiosus was a fifth-century bishop of Brescia whose remembrance is closely tied to the church of Sant’Alessandro. The diocesan museum describes the church’s foundation by him as a tradition. It also identifies the urn beneath the altar of Saint Alexander as containing his relics, and records that the burial was moved within the church during later alterations.

Alfredo Brontesi’s historical account points to the episcopal list preserved in Rampert’s discourse of 838. It places Gaudiosus after Sylvinus and before Optatianus. Since Optatianus appears as bishop in 451, Brontesi concludes that Gaudiosus had died before that year. This establishes a limit for the chronology without supplying a detailed account of his life.

His chronology is not secure. The National Gallery’s account places his death around 445.

Emidio Zana’s study of a medieval Brescian sacramentary instead assigns his episcopate approximately to 433–442. The same study identifies a March 7 entry for Gaudiosus and attributes its addition to a later hand, probably of the twelfth century. This evidence concerns the history of his commemoration; it does not establish an exact day of death.

Gaudiosus’s later importance at Sant’Alessandro is visible in Romanino’s altarpiece, made around 1524. The National Gallery explains his inclusion through his connection with the church and the rediscovery there of remains identified as his in 1454. It cautions that the painted face may portray a churchman from Romanino’s own time. The image is evidence of later veneration, not an authenticated likeness of the fifth-century bishop.
