Gaudiosus of Tarazona

About Gaudiosus of Tarazona
Gaudiosus of Tarazona was a bishop in Visigothic Spain during the sixth century. The Diocese of Tarazona includes him among its early bishops but says their exact terms of office cannot be securely dated. Its calendar names him San Gaudioso and places his observance on 3 November.
The Catholic Encyclopedia says surviving details of his life rest chiefly on late liturgical lessons and a parchment biography found when his remains were translated in 1573. It describes him as a pupil of the monastic leader Victorianus before his appointment to Tarazona. The Diocese of Barbastro-Monzón likewise places Gaudiosus among monks associated with Victorianus. These traditions show how he was remembered, but they do not establish a precise early chronology.
The diocesan calendar gives 541 as his death year and 3 November as the day, while the encyclopedia says he died about 540 and reports a parchment date of 29 October. Because these witnesses differ, this record stores only an approximate death year and treats 3 November as a local feast, not a certain death anniversary. Tarazona’s continuing devotion to Gaudiosus is clear even where details of his life are not.
