About Gelasius of Poitiers

Gelasius, remembered in French as Gelais, belongs to the early succession of bishops of Poitiers. Nominis places him in the fifth century, but the diocesan information reproduced there explicitly says that no precise dates are available. His episcopal identity is clearer than the chronology of his life.

The diocesan notice confirms his inclusion in the official list of bishops. It does not supply a narrative of his upbringing, appointment or daily ministry. This brief record cannot establish where he was born or died, and those details remain unknown here.

His name also survives in the religious heritage of Saint-Gelais near Niort. The municipality’s historical presentation describes a priory founded in 1109 and dedicated to this bishop of Poitiers. That dedication belongs to his later remembrance, many centuries after the period assigned to his episcopate.

The local tourism office likewise identifies Gelasius as the saint honored by the church. It describes the building’s Romanesque east end and later Gothic façade. These surviving features belong to the medieval church, not to a building known to have been used by Gelasius himself.

Nominis lists January 20 for his observance. The diocesan information it reproduces associates that date with the collective celebration of the holy bishops of Poitiers. This is a date of remembrance, not evidence for the day on which he died.
