About Geminianus
Geminianus was a bishop of Modena in late Roman Italy and remains the city’s patron saint. Treccani places him in the later fourth century and records his participation in a council at Milan associated with Ambrose. Modena’s heritage office cautions that very little else is certain about his life. His exact birth place and year are not securely known.
A local tradition places his death on 31 January 397, but the heritage office explicitly labels that date traditional. It also says the first surviving images of him appeared nearly seven centuries after his death. For this reason this record leaves life dates unset and makes no claim that the portrait is a historical likeness. The cathedral and its art attest a longstanding civic and religious cult, even where the individual biography is sparse.
The city celebrates Geminianus on 31 January. A later story says he protected Modena from an invading army by covering it with fog, but the municipal account identifies that as legend. His documented role as bishop and patron can be told without treating later miracle stories as historical events.
