About George of Kratovo

George of Kratovo was a young goldsmith remembered for his martyrdom in Sofia in 1515. According to the life written by the priest Pejo, he learned his craft before moving from Kratovo to Sofia, where Pejo became his religious teacher.

The account describes pressure to become Muslim, an accusation of insulting Islam, and imprisonment. It also preserves his fear: facing torture by fire, George asked to be ransomed. Pejo visited him in prison. The narrative ends with his execution by burning and the recovery of his body for Christian burial.

Pejo’s work is the central witness to this life. The Institute of Macedonian Literature describes its author as an eyewitness, while also examining how he shaped the story through Christian literary patterns. The trial recalls the Passion of Christ, and its dialogues defend Christian teaching. Such a text preserves a community’s memory of a martyr, but its speeches cannot simply be treated as a court transcript.

George’s story circulated in both longer and shorter South Slavic versions. Athonite monks later carried news of him to Russia, where another life was composed. This transmission helped his memory travel well beyond the places in which he had lived. It also produced different versions of the story.

The Orthodox Encyclopedia identifies conflicting family details, ages, and dates in the Russian retelling, with possible confusion involving another Sofia martyr. Those versions should not be combined into a single seamless biography. His remembrance also entered the working life of Balkan towns. Ethnologist Temenuga Georgieva documents goldsmiths in Sofia, Kratovo, Skopje, and Pirot honoring George as their patron. Her account presents this as a regional guild tradition connected with his occupation, rather than a universal designation for every craft worker.

Kratovo continues to identify him with its own history. In a 2023 interview, Mayor Todorche Nikolovski named George as the town’s saint and patron. The Orthodox Church in America commemorates him on February 11 under the name George, New Martyr of Sofia.
