About Gerard of Potenza

Gerard of Potenza, known locally as Gerardo Della Porta or La Porta, came from the Piacenza region and became bishop of Potenza in the early twelfth century. The Italian bishops’ diocesan history places his episcopate from 1111 to 1119 and records his election by the local community. Potenza’s cathedral was later dedicated jointly to him and Mary, reflecting his enduring place in the city’s worship.

The exact death year is disputed in current church sources: the Potenza diocesan history gives an episcopate ending in 1119, while a French Catholic martyrology page says he died in 1112. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him as bishop on 30 October but does not settle that disagreement in its short entry. This record therefore leaves the structured death date unset. The diocesan history says Callixtus II enrolled him among the saints, without assigning a secure year here.

Potenza celebrates Gerard as patron with a local solemnity on 30 May, while the Roman Martyrology remembers him on 30 October. A traditional city parade includes stories of an invading force turned back through his intervention; the diocesan history treats the invasion account as legend and suggests a later origin for the parade. His episcopal service and continuing local devotion can be presented without treating that story as a dated event of his life.
