About Gerard of Toul

Gerard of Toul was born at Cologne in the early tenth century and served as a canon there before becoming bishop of Toul in 963. The New Catholic Encyclopedia places his birth around 935, while a French Catholic source says around 930; the structured year is therefore approximate. He led the church of Toul for more than thirty years.

Gerard strengthened religious life in Toul, completing work on Saint-Mansuy Abbey and establishing a women’s community later converted into a chapter of canons. The encyclopedia also records his care for the cathedral, consecrated in 981. French church accounts emphasize his support for the poor and the establishment of schools and hospitals. These institutional works shaped his episcopal service more securely than later miracle stories.

He died at Toul on 23 April 994. His successor, later Pope Leo IX, arranged for the elevation of his relics in 1050. The French Catholic calendar marks 23 April as his local feast and quotes the Roman Martyrology’s praise for his care of the city and its monasteries. He is a distinct bishop from Gerald of Sauve-Majeure and Gerard of Potenza.
