Biography
Germain of Paris

About Germain of Paris
Germain of Paris was born near Autun in the late fifth century. After study and years in a local monastic community, he became abbot of Saint-Symphorien near Autun. Accounts remember an abbot whose gifts to the poor worried some of his monks. This concern for people without resources remained a mark of his later ministry.
He became bishop of Paris in 555, during the reign of Childebert I. The French bishops’ account associates him with the release of prisoners and enslaved people and with the foundation of Sainte-Croix-Saint-Vincent, the community later known as Saint-Germain-des-Prés. His bishopric joined the practical care of people in distress with a public role in the Frankish kingdom.
Germain also tried to limit conflict among the rulers who followed Childebert. A letter to Queen Brunhild asking her to help avert further war was preserved. His effort did not bring lasting peace before his death in Paris on 28 May 576. The surviving accounts and the abbey that bore his name explain why the Church in France still commemorates him on that date.
