Germanus of Capua

Portrait of Germanus of Capua

About Germanus of Capua

Germanus of Capua was a bishop entrusted with a journey to Constantinople during efforts to restore communion between the churches of Rome and the imperial capital. A surviving letter of Pope Hormisdas names Germanus among the envoys sent to Emperor Justin in 519. The pope presented the delegates as men suited to the seriousness of the task and asked for imperial support in bringing the churches together.

Germanus did not undertake that mission alone. The letter also names Bishop John, the priest Blandus, and the deacon Felix. Its language places their work within a larger exchange of messages between the pope and emperor.

Vatican News describes a Life written around 873 that tells of Germanus selling his inheritance and giving the proceeds to the poor. That account presents renunciation as the beginning of his spiritual vocation.

Gregory the Great remembers him in the Dialogues through two accounts of prayer and the life beyond death. In one, Benedict sees Germanus’s soul carried to heaven by angels. Benedict sends a messenger to Capua, who learns that the bishop died at the time of the vision.

In another story, Germanus visits hot baths on medical advice and encounters the deceased deacon Paschasius. The deacon asks for prayer, explaining his suffering through his support for the wrong claimant in a disputed papal election. Germanus prays, returns several days later, and no longer finds him there.

His memory remains part of worship in Cassino. A diocesan report of the 2017 celebration names him as patron of the Chiesa Madre parish and, with Mary Assumed into Heaven and Benedict, of the city. It describes the display of an old marble statue and a relic received from Piacenza, followed by a procession through the parish.

Germanus is also honored as patron of Scisciano, where the parish is dedicated jointly to him and Martin.

His Catholic commemoration falls on 30 October. Vatican News itself marks the proposed date of his death as uncertain, a reminder that a remembered feast and a securely established date of death are different kinds of evidence.
