Gerontius the Canonarch of the Kiev Caves

About Gerontius the Canonarch of the Kiev Caves

Gerontius lived in the fourteenth century and served as canonarch, or leader of church singing, at the Kiev Caves monastery. The Orthodox Church in America's notice says that he spent his life in the community and remembers his abstinence, obedience, and prayer. It records his burial in the Far Caves and his inclusion in their common commemoration. The notice preserves a particular form of monastic work: leading the singing that accompanied the community's worship. It supplies no exact birth or death date, family details, or further personal episodes. Those limits remain visible rather than being expanded into an unsupported career narrative.
