About Gobnait
Gobnait is an early Irish woman saint especially associated with Ballyvourney in County Cork. A historical survey records an old religious site there, a church and a long local memory of a women’s community. It also notes many forms of her name, including Gobnet and Gopnat. The sites bearing her name across southern Ireland show the breadth of her later veneration; they do not prove that she personally visited each one.
A story says that she was directed to settle where she found nine white deer. In the local tradition, that place was Ballyvourney. The tale belongs to the saint’s remembered life, not to a dated eyewitness record. The survey itself cautions against turning every place-name into a literal itinerary.
Her precise lifetime, birth place and death date cannot be established from these accounts. What remains visible is a durable local pilgrimage: the Cork County Council heritage survey describes the church, graveyard and nearby well at Ballyvourney and the annual gathering on 11 February. Remembering Gobnait through this continuing observance lets the historical limits stay clear while honouring the community that preserved her name.
