About Gordianus
Gordianus is remembered as an early Christian martyr at Rome, commonly commemorated with Epimachus on 10 May. The New Catholic Encyclopedia traces their cult in the West back to the sixth century. It also warns that the legends written about them are fictitious and that details of their identities remain uncertain. These limits are more important than the vivid later story.
One later account makes Gordianus a Roman judge converted through the example of a priest named Januarius and killed under Julian. The critical encyclopedia rejects that narrative as reliable personal history. Sources also conflict about the century of Gordianus’s death, so this record leaves his life dates unset. A remembered burial along the Via Latina and the long-standing joint commemoration with Epimachus are safer anchors for his profile.
The Roman martyr must be distinguished from Gordius of Caesarea, a soldier commemorated in a separate eastern tradition. For Gordianus, the secure story is a Roman cult and a May feast, not a detailed biography.
