About Gorgonius of Rome

Gorgonius is remembered as a Roman martyr buried in the cemetery of Marcellinus and Peter on the Via Labicana. The church biography identifies his notice in the Depositio Martyrum of 354 and an epitaph by Pope Damasus as early witnesses to his cult.

The story portraying him as a court official in Nicomedia belongs to a confusion with another Gorgonius. It cannot supply the Roman martyr’s occupation or trial.

His September 9 feast was removed from the general calendar in 1969 and left to local and special calendars. The brief burial and cult notices preserve his identity without establishing a complete personal biography.
