Gregory of Langres

Portrait of Gregory of Langres

About Gregory of Langres

Gregory of Langres was a bishop in sixth-century Gaul. A French Catholic account remembers him first as a civic leader at Autun and then as bishop of Langres. It says that his pastoral work included church building and care for his community. The change from civil office to episcopal service is central to the account, although many details of his daily life cannot be independently reconstructed.

He belonged to a family with a long place in the church of Gaul. Gregory of Tours, the later bishop and historian, was his maternal great-grandson and took Gregory’s name in remembrance of him. The two men are distinct; their shared name and family relationship can otherwise make brief accounts confusing.

The French bishops’ account places his death during travel between Dijon and Langres for the Epiphany season. It offers 539 in its heading, while the Roman Martyrology text reproduced on the same page says 540. This unresolved discrepancy is why this profile does not assign him a precise death year. His January 4 observance preserves the remembrance of his ministry without resolving that chronology.
