Gregory the Iconographer of the Kiev Caves
About Gregory the Iconographer of the Kiev Caves
Gregory is remembered as an icon painter and colleague of Alypius at the Kiev Caves. The Orthodox Church in America's notice cites an account of holy painters that attributes many wonderworking icons to him. This is a claim of received veneration, not an identification of authenticated surviving paintings. The ninth ode of the Near Caves service calls him Byzantine. The notice suggests that this may connect him with painters who came from Constantinople to decorate the monastery's Dormition church. That proposed connection remains a possibility, not an established birthplace or travel itinerary. The brief testimony preserves his work and a monastic association without providing exact life dates or a detailed account of his training.
