Guiraud of Beziers

Portrait of Guiraud of Beziers

About Guiraud of Beziers

Guiraud was born at Puissalicon, near Béziers, and became a canon regular before his election as bishop. Nominis remembers his kindness as a source of peace in the religious houses where he stayed. His episcopate was brief: the notice dates his election to 1121 and his death to 1123.

The regional heritage inventory places his birth around 1070. It describes his entry into Sainte-Marie de Cassan as a novice around 1084 and his later service as prior. Its account connects his leadership with reform of the community’s spiritual life.

The Martyrology remembers his reluctant election and continued humility as bishop.

Puissalicon continues to identify Guiraud as its patron. The municipality’s own account names him as the village’s protector and recalls his service at Cassan and Béziers. This explicitly stated local patronage is distinct from simply finding his name attached to a building.

A house in Puissalicon is traditionally identified as his birthplace. The regional inventory carefully presents that identification as tradition. The building became an oratory in 1901, and the chapel preserves relics granted to the parish by the bishopric of Montpellier in 1857. This later devotional history does not authenticate the house as an eleventh-century birthplace.

Nominis lists his local commemoration on November 5. The surviving account offers a short life remembered for community service and peacemaking, rather than a detailed itinerary of his ministry.
