Helladius of Toledo

About Helladius of Toledo
Helladius served in the royal administration before entering the monastery of Agali near Toledo. He became its abbot and later bishop of Toledo.
Ildefonsus recalls that Helladius visited Agali while still engaged in public business. On these visits he set aside the display of his position and joined the monks in their work, carrying bundles of straw to the oven. The account presents his later decision to remain at the monastery as the fulfillment of an attachment already expressed in ordinary tasks.
As abbot, he guided the community and increased its shared resources. Ildefonsus says that Helladius was already elderly when called to the episcopate. He particularly remembers his generosity toward people in need and describes his teaching as embodied in daily actions rather than books. This is the appreciative testimony of someone whom Helladius himself ordained.
Ildefonsus’s account preserves the main outline of his career. It describes his return to Agali near the end of his life, where he ordained Ildefonsus as a deacon.
A surviving letter from Isidore of Seville also addresses Helladius with other bishops acting as an ecclesiastical tribunal. He died before the Fourth Council of Toledo in December 633, which his successor Justus attended.
