Heribert of Cologne

Portrait of Heribert of Cologne

About Heribert of Cologne

Heribert was born around 970 in Worms and entered the service of the imperial court. He became a chancellor under Otto III before his appointment as archbishop of Cologne in 999. His work therefore joined imperial administration to the care of a large local church.

After Otto’s death, Heribert established a Benedictine abbey at Deutz, across the Rhine from Cologne. The archdiocesan history connects the foundation with a promise made to the emperor. He dedicated its church in 1020. Deutz became his burial place and the centre of his early veneration.

Regional historical scholarship also describes his concern for poor people and the provision of relief. His episcopate unfolded amid political change, yet the institutions he supported continued beyond it. The later title of rain-bringer belongs to the history of devotion to him, rather than to a documented weather event in his lifetime.

The Cologne archdiocese gives his death as March 16, 1021, and commemorates him on that day. A Deutsche Biographie entry gives March 21 instead. The year is secure enough to record, but the conflicting day has been left out of the life-date field. The archdiocese also observes the August 30 translation of his relics.
