Hermes of Moesia

About Hermes of Moesia
Hermes is commemorated with Caius as a martyr in Moesia on January 4. The current Roman Martyrology places their remembrance in that Balkan region; an Italian bishops' edition locates Hermes at Ratiaria, now Arcer, and Caius at Bononia, now Vidin. These are separate place associations within the same commemoration.
An older English Martyrology says that Hermes, Aggaeus, and Caius suffered “at Bologna” under Maximian. The place reflects an old confusion between the Moesian Bononia and Bologna in Italy. A source-critical study of the martyrologies also finds no secure basis for the emperor attribution and leaves Aggaeus's identity uncertain. The current Roman listing names only Hermes and Caius.
The reliable profile is therefore brief: Hermes's name, martyr commemoration, Moesian setting, and January 4 feast. The sources reviewed do not support an exact lifetime, a manner of death, or a personal narrative.
